5 Important Things to Remember when going through a “Not Okay” Season/Day.

Out of habit, with one click, you open your social media, and everything looks perfect in everyone else’s life. Ever got that feeling? Everything looks magical, everyone looks happy, posting just happy photos, living a happy life. BUT as we all know, life isn’t all Rainbows and Sunshine, and that is a reality. Everything will not be perfect all the time.

You will have 1000 000 pages in your story, chapters filled with joy, disappointment, a lot of highs & a lot of lows. This is life!

In the midst of a tough time, being told to ‘focus on the bright side’ can just make you feel even worse. Sometimes life is difficult. Disappointing. Hard. Frightening. Sad. Heartbreaking even. You find yourself stuck in your situation, your emotions, feelings, and you just don’t feel okay.

You need to know that it’s REALLY OKAY not to feel okay sometimes.

When you’re going through a tough time, nothing means more than having someone come alongside who understands what you’re going through, and His name is Jesus.

In God’s word it says:

Ecclesiastes 3:1-22
For everything there is a season, 
and a time for every matter 
under heaven, a time to heal, 
a time to break down, 
a time to weep, a time to laugh, 
a time to mourn, a time to dance, 
a time to embrace...etc.
Ephesians 2:8
For by grace, you have been saved 
through faith. 
And this is not your own doing; 
it is the gift of God.

Here’s how you can manage your “Not Okay” Season/Day:

1. Accept the fact that you don’t feel okay

Ever felt like everything that comes your way is hard? Sometimes, it seems like one thing goes wrong after another. And another, and another. Whatever your situation, feelings/emotions are, accept that you don’t feel okay will bring more freedom than “faking” everything is full of rainbows and sunshine, because it’s not!

Accept the fact that you’re feeling emotional, that your situation is not okay and that you struggle to understand why you need to go through something this hard. Cry it out, eat it out and get everything out that don’t feel okay. If you don’t get rid of all the feelings/emotions, you can’t make space for the beauty to come out of you.

Don’t feel humiliated by your situation but rather accept your sitaution and know that it’s part of your story written by God to glorify Him. Bow before God, bring your sadness, feelings/emotions and situation to Him. He’s the only one who can make you feel better, give you joy and a peaceful heart.

2. Don’t get trapped that you need to be tough & strong all the time, but find your strength in God

Why do we always feel the need to be strong? Why do we feel guilty when taking a time-out? Do you ever feel overwhelmed with such guilt? How can you sit and cry and feel sorry for yourself, when you have so much to be grateful for? There’s so much work you need to get done; you don’t see anyone else making excuses for themselves.

The world out there is tough, and the world emphasizes that being tough is the only survival guide. But sometimes tough seem too hard and that’s also okay.

You think you must be strong all the time.

Just take a break. Release the emotions that you’re going through and let yourself feel the way you’re feeling. You’ve been dealing with a lot. Everyone has their own struggles, issues to work through, and sometimes things don’t turn out the way you want them to.

You don’t have to put all the pressure on yourself to be strong when you have no strength left. Remembering that God is the only one who can give you strength, will release you from getting tired in a tough season. Ask Him for strength and guidance every single day. You will see the power of His strength work through you and you will stand amazed.

3. See the bigger picture and remember this season will also pass

Tomorrow will be a new day. The way you’re feeling right now, will not last forever. Don’t lose track of the road ahead, the best is yet to come.

Don’t think the situation you’re going through is for nothing! God wouldn’t have allowed it unless He had a purpose. You will come out stronger for having experienced that pain, no matter what you’re dealing with right now.

Even though your storm feels too rough right now, you will get through this if you make a choice to lift up your head and see the bigger picture. You need to make a decision by trusting the process and remembering the days you experienced breakthrough in tough times. Your breakthrough will come again, just be patient and believe it.

4. You’re not weak, you’re just human

If scrolling through social media makes you feel even sadder than your current emotion, remember that everyone is struggling with some kind of battle. You’re not alone. Never compare the way you feel to someone else’s perfect social media life. Of course, you will feel even sadder.

It’s okay to be in pain; no one expects you to be happy all the time. Having emotions and feelings doesn’t make you weak. Having emotions and feelings makes you human.

Your feelings are valid, no matter what they are. It doesn’t matter what others say, it matters how you react to your situation. We are all human beings and we will experience trials/loneliness just like Jesus did. “Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well” – John 4:6. “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” – Matthew 27:46.

Remember that you have the right to feel not okay and remember to keep your focus on the one who is able to help you get through this. God wants to crawl down to the darkest part of your situation, if you’ll let Him, He wants to wrap His arms around you.

5. Embrace who you are, your situation, feelings & emotions

Don’t compare your situation to what’s happening in everyone else’s life.

Sometimes being okay is also okay. Don’t let anyone tell you to get over something if you’re heartbroken, sad, or disappointed. You are the only cheerleader who needs to cheer for yourself, even on the bad days.

Becoming focused on your own sadness, troubles, and situations not only steals you from your joy but also from having an abundant life. You are so much more than what you’re feeling and going through right now.

It’s also okay to feel sad, disappointed but never step into the trap to feel unworthy. Never! Stay focused on what you have to offer. You are not your situation and your situation is just a stepping stone to the beautiful road ahead.

It’s all about the journey, the lessons learned and to find God’s heart/voice in the middle of the storm. Don’t wish your difficult season over, rather rise from your feelings/emotions and embrace what God has put into your hand for today. He will make beauty out of the ashes if you believe in His purpose for your life/situation.

Embrace your situation, embrace your emotions, embrace your disappointment, embrace the growth process & let God have His way in you. Let Him heal you & let Him teach you to be brave and strong. You are here so that His name will be glorified through you.
